Referral Routes. How do you make an appointment? Do you need to see your family doctor/ GP or specialist first? Initial Assessment. What will a first appointment be like? What will it cover? Who should attend? What can be expected by the end of it? Treatment. What are the different types of therapy that you or your child might be offered and what are the differences between them? How is the decision made as to which one might be best for you? What will treatment involve and how long will it take?	Initial Assessment Your first consultation is scheduled for 1 hour 30 minutes. Normally, this initial assessment appointment is attended by the child him or herself and one or both parents. Siblings are also warmly invited to attend. Some families choose to include grandparents too, especially if they are closely involved in the child’s life. Parents are welcome to contact Dr Krasner before the initial assessment to discuss who might attend this appointment. Within this appointment, Dr Krasner will ask many questions, allowing for a thorough assessment that takes into account home and family circumstances, developmental history, school and educational factors and yields a detailed account and history of the difficulties being experienced. For young children, there are toys available in the room and for all ages, the aim is to create an atmosphere that is serious and thoughtful whilst also being unthreatening, non-judgemental, warm and empathic. The purpose of this initial assessment is to reach an understanding of the difficulties you are experiencing and to develop a plan to resolve these. Your plan will include the number of visits we jointly agree and the form of treatment that will be offered. Sometimes it is possible to reach this point at the end of the initial assessment appointment but with some children and families, further assessment appointments may be required. These subsequent appointments last for one hour and may include an individual assessment with the child or adolescent concerned. On some occasions, formal psychometric testing is used as part of an extended assessment process. Frequently, an assessment appointment may be offered to the parent(s), unaccompanied by their children. Children are not seen without their parents at their initial assessment appointment. For your overall welfare, it is normal practice for Dr Krasner to inform your General Practitioner and/or referring specialist that you are consulting at this Practice and to send him/her a brief summary of the assessment and treatment of you/your child. If you do not want this to occur, please discuss it at your first appointment.
